People usually start looking for a personal lubricant only when they begin to experience issues during intimacy. But lubes can be much more than a problem-solver, with many other advantages: smoother intimate skin, more comfort during lovemaking with less friction, more pleasurable sex, and an overall better time in bed!

And while water-based lubricants are more common than their oil-based and silicone-based counterparts, let me tell you – oil-based lubricants are an excellent option as well and have numerous unique benefits.

What are oil-based lubricants?

As you might have guessed from the name, oil-based lubricants contain oils, which can be synthetic or natural. Premium and natural oil-based lubes contain plant-origin oils like coconut, almond, or sunflower seed oil, while cheaper options may contain synthetic oils. In other words, these are formulated around a base of an oil or a combination of oils, instead of a silicone or water base that is usually found in skin care products.

Oil-based lubricants are considered more effective body lubricants than their water-based alternatives since they don’t evaporate like the latter, leading to a more fun intimacy without the distraction of reapplying the lube.

If you are a couple in a long-term relationship and don’t require or prefer using protection, then oil-based lubes can be suitable choice for you. They are also an easy choice for those who are finicky about using products with additives and preservatives – which are usually present in other kinds of lubricants – on their private parts. A note of caution: don’t use oil-based lubricants with latex condoms as oil can break the latex.

Advantages of oil-based lubricants

If you opt for an oil-based lube, you can expect the following benefits:

1. Better, conditioned skin

Oil-based lubricants can nourish and moisturize dry skin. Premium ones contain other nourishing ingredients like vitamin E and plant butters that condition the skin. In fact, the most premium and organic oil-based lubes are known to contain some amazing ingredients like cocoa butter, shea butter, sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, jojoba oil, and coconut oil. These can provide extra care to sensitive and dry tissues.

2. Lubrication and massage 2-in-1 use

Oil-based lubes, unlike silicone and water-based lubes, can also be used as sensuous oils for a full-on intimate massage during foreplay. This can help with sexual stimulation and arousal. They are great as massage oils because the benefits to intimate skin can also cover rest of the body. They are easy to spread and can fast lead the couple from a sensual massage to raunchy lovemaking.

3. Longer lasting

Since oil-based lubes don’t dry up quickly, they last longer than water-based and silicone-based options. So, you won’t have to bother with reapplying them during your intimacy session. They offer a luscious and smooth slickness that outperforms other options.

Plus, the skin doesn’t absorb the oil base fast. So, the lube will most likely last longer than you!

4. Safe to use lubricants

Hardly anyone wants to use toxic or unsafe synthetic ingredients in their nether areas. This makes a natural oil-based lube your best bet. These are usually preservative-free, non-toxic, and don’t contain harmful chemicals like petrochemicals, glycerin, or parabens and other preservatives.

One such lubricant type is coconut oil-based lubes. These can be healthy and natural, and be a great addition to your bedroom accessories!

5. Toy-safe

Even though water-based lubes are usually recommended if you like using toys in bed or just want to experiment with them, for some couples oil-based lubricants can be a better option.

Silicone-based lubes are not the ideal choice in this situation because they will damage your toys. Water-based solutions, on the other hand, dry out rapidly, so you’ll have to stop playing with your toys to reapply the lubricant – and where’s the fun in that?

On the other hand, oil-based lubes don’t dry up, and they also don’t damage your toys if you clean them up thoroughly once you’re done using them.

Choosing the right oil-based lubricant

When buying an oil-based lubricant, we recommend going for a natural plant-based oil – or even better, a certified organic lube – since they are much softer on the body and assure a safer experience. Make sure to steer clear of home-hacks that are clearly not meant to be used as an intimate lube, like Vaseline, hair oils or baby oils. With the right choice, you can experience a really enhanced enjoyment during your bedtime play!
